Back from vacation....hit a small snag

As I was getting set up to continue the engine reassembly the other day, I noticed a small (I hope) problem.
The return stop for the kick-starter was worn / broken off.
I'm now in the process of gradually building this back up with several layers of J&B Weld.  Hopefully this will work and I should be ready to resume assembly in a few more days.

  1. Hi!!
I bet you know how strong the spring is and how fast the kickstart pedal returns to its initial position. If it's strong enough to break the aluminium stopper, imagine what it'll do to JB weld...?
This is a common problem with these engines and the only long lasting solution for this to weld some aluminium to the place where the stopper was and then file it to a decent shape. My 2 cents...

  2. Hey,
Actually, I don't know how fast the pedal returns, but I get your point. I thought I could control that by not letting it (the pedal) flop back on it's own. All I actually know about motorcylces is what I've learned since I started working on this one as a spare-time project, so anyone who knows anything probably knows more than I do, and I welcome advice.
If you know, in the photo above, what is the hole in the broken area. It is threaded but there wasn't anything there when I took it apart. I was kind of assuming that perhaps some previous owner tried to bolt on a fix for the broken stop. I haven't found any pictures that show anything bolted in that area.

  3. Right you are, the J&B popped off with only the slightest provocation.
